If it does not work at thumbnail size, it does not work

Most brand creative is designed at full size on a large screen and consumed at the size of a fingernail, in motion, next to something more interesting.

There is a gap between how creative work is reviewed and how it is encountered. It is reviewed enlarged, in silence, by people who already know what it is for. It is encountered small, in a feed, by someone who is not looking for it and will not stop unless something makes them.

Closing that gap does not require a different aesthetic. It requires reviewing work under the conditions it will actually face.

The practical checks

  • Shrink it. If the layout stops working at 15% size, the hierarchy is too flat — something needs to be much larger or much stronger than everything else.
  • Turn the sound off. Most video is first seen silent. If the first three seconds depend on audio, they are not doing any work.
  • Desaturate it. If the design falls apart in greyscale, it was relying on colour to create contrast that structure should be providing.
  • Put it next to a competitor's post. Recognisability is relative, and a brand that looks distinctive in isolation can be invisible in context.

Recognition before comprehension

At small sizes people recognise before they read. Shape, colour relationship and composition register first; words register only if the first impression bought enough attention to earn a second. This is why a consistent visual system outperforms individually clever posts — consistency is what makes recognition possible at all.

In practice, that means fixing a small number of things and repeating them without apology: a consistent crop, a consistent type treatment, a consistent position for the mark. Variation should happen inside that frame, not to it.

One idea per asset

The most common cause of weak creative is not poor design — it is too many objectives assigned to one piece. When a single post has to introduce the brand, explain the offer, list the features, carry a testimonial and drive an action, the design has no choice but to reduce everything to the same size, which means nothing leads.

Deciding what a piece is not responsible for is usually the fastest improvement available, and it costs nothing.

If any of this is relevant to something you are planning, we are happy to talk it through before there is a brief.
